Secretary-Treasurer Patrick D. Kelly: In mid-December the Multi-Employer Pension reform act was passed and signed. The new law is referred to as MEPRA. The WCTPF is in very strong shape. This law is going to allow some of the other funds avoid insolvency. For information on this law we urge you to visit our website at www.teamsters952.org and also read the recent letter from Chairman Chuck Mack regarding the law.
The merger of Albertsons and Safeway is not completed and should be finalized later this month by the Federal Trade Commission. It requires the divestiture of many stores and they will be rebannered as Haggen. This will lead to layoffs over the next few months of many of our members at Albertsons. The bulk of this distribution work is going to Unified Grocers. We are working with the IBT and JC42 leadership to get as many of our laid off members placed in the grocery sector. Unified, Sysco and Stater Bros. are all going to be hiring. We do not know at this point where the final sourcing for Albertsons and Safeway is going to be. Stay in contact with your Stewards. If you have any questions contact your business representative.
One of our long time business representatives Ernesto Medrano is leaving to take a job with the LA/OC Building Trades. We wish him well in that position and we welcome Norma Lopez who is replacing him as a business representative.
