INSTRUCTIONS TO PICKET
As you know, this Union is on strike against Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California. The National Labor Relations Act permits us to picket this Employer not only at its principal place of business but also wherever its employees are working. Most of the drivers employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California spend by far the greater portion of their time away from the Employer's facility. In order to carry our message to these employees, we must therefore follow the trucks and picket the employees where they make their pickups and deliveries or are otherwise working.
However, while we may legally picket the drivers of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California when they are working at the premises of a customer, we cannot legally do anything that would induce the customer’s employees to strike or otherwise stop work. It is, therefore, absolutely necessary that you follow these instructions.
1. Location of Pickets – You will be given a letter directed to the customer upon whose premises deliveries or pickups are being made. This letter includes a request that you be permitted to go upon the customer’s premises so that you may picket as close to the truck and driver as reasonably possible. You should give a copy of this letter to someone in authority at the customer’s premises, preferably the manager or whoever is in charge, before you begin picketing. If you are given permission to enter the property, you will come upon the premises and picket as close to the truck and driver as possible. You will not, in that event, engage in any picketing at the entrance to the property or anywhere else.
If you are not allowed to come upon the property, you will picket just outside the property at the entrance closest to the place where the truck and employees are working. It is important that picketing be limited to the gates or entrances used by employees of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California. In that event, the entrance is the only place at which you will engage in picketing.
2. When to Picket – You may picket at a customer’s premises only while employees of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California are actually upon the premises. We are picketing solely for the purpose of bringing our message home to the employees of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California. If at any time the employees of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California are not present at the customer’s premises, the picket signs should be immediately removed.
3. Picket Sign – You will be given a picket sign that will clearly state that the picketing is directed only at Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California. This picket sign is the only picket sign that is ever to be carried. Do not wave the picket sign at any persons, but simply carry the picket sign back and forth in the normal manner for picketing.
4. Conduct of Pickets – Under no circumstances may you make any statement or remark of any kind to any person at the premises at which said picketing is being conducted.
